HIGH SCHOOL PROJECTS

A recent study conducted by the Responsible Gambling Council (RGC) found that more than one-third of Ontario high school students gambled for money in the past year and three to four percent of teens who gamble experience gambling problems. Additional research also indicates that once teens reach the age of 18, the risk of developing a gambling problem almost doubles. This emphasizes the importance of prevention messages that reach young people.

To raise awareness of the risks that can occur if gambling gets out of control, RGC sponsors a number of projects within Ontario’s high school system, including an annual contest. The contest challenges students to use their talents in various mediums to raise awareness about the risks of teen gambling. Often students have an opportunity to see their work incorporated into RGC’s future touring drama productions.

In past years, students have submitted scripts, songs, short stories, web page designs and poems in these annual contests. This year, RGC will hold a Photography Contest with a 1st place scholarship of $1,000 and 2nd place of $500.

Deadline for submission is Monday, January 19, 2009. For contest criteria and an entry form, please click here.
